10km challenge - Week 3 Day 3

12 week 10km challenge:
WEEK 3:
Day 3:             Walk 5 minutes. Jog 5 minutes. Repeat three times. 

Note to self: it is not fun running past houses where people are braaing and all you can think about is the delicious smells wafting through the air.   And the fact that you are running instead of eating.  

PS: The field still needs mowing.

10km challenge - Week 3 Day 1



12 week 10km challenge:
WEEK 3:
Day 1:             Walk 5 minutes. Jog 5 minutes. Repeat three times. 

I am sure that there are some of you who thought that I had given up on this whole running thing, right?   Shame on you ye of little faith!   Apart from missing one week of training due to excessive workload and some issues with my back, I have been sticking to the programme and have made it to week 3.   Go me!   Thanks to the fact that I run in the early evening, my field has been relatively clear of school boys and ogling strangers, thus making it my haunt of choice.   Thanks to the awesomeness that is Cape Town, there is a vast array of wildlife on offer for my viewing pleasure including hadedas, Egyptian geese, guinea fowl, and today I even found a brown crab... Ok, it was dead, but still!   Unfortunately, thanks to the rain and very poor grounds keeping, the grass has become very long and clumpy.   I shall have to write a strongly worded letter to management as this, couple with the excessive amount of molehills, is seriously interfering with my precious training!  

Uncooperative terrain aside, I really think that I am starting to notice a small improvement (touch wood!) and fingers crossed it will just keep getting better and better.   The one thing that I am struggling with though, is boredom.   I don’t care what anybody says, running is BORING!   Sure, it gives you time to think (which I do in excess) but I sort of wish there was something that I could do whilst running.   Even as I am writing this, I realise what this technological age has turned me into, where I am incapable of just sitting without a phone/laptop/radio in my general vicinity.   So I have decided that fitness aside, at least this running thing gives me a chance to escape all things electric and try to sort out what goes on in this cluttered mind of mine!

Let’s hope that I can keep this shindig up!   My bum and thighs still jiggle with every step I take which I HATE, but hopefully in time they will be disciplined into submission!   Bring on the rest of week 3.

I am such a racist

Something happened today that I can’t seem to stop thinking about, and so I have decided that the best solution would be for me to share it with you. At 11:00, my school breaks for tea and my classmates and I always go and sit outside for a snack and a chat. This is a time for relaxation, for catching-up, and generally for talking rubbish.   Today, however, our valuable chill-session was interrupted by a nameless checked-shirt wearing newspaper-carrying yoghurt-eating young guy, who was intent on ruining our precious 30 minute break.   Now I like to think of myself as a pretty open and friendly person, so when this stranger asked if he could join our table for some company, I was the first one to make a space for him.   For once, I regret being brought up with manners.

The guy – who, to make things easier, I am going to name Theodore – sits down and immediately opens his newspaper to an article about the ongoing textbook saga in Limpopo.   He then proceeds to rant on at length about how shocking it is that the book “50 Shades of Grey” is being circulated throughout the country and yet our children aren’t getting any textbooks, and how do we feel about this situation?   Yes, he has a point, and yes, I’m sure that it is a pretty interesting topic of discussion to have at a dinner party with like-minded friends, but this is not how one starts up a conversation with a group of people you have never met.   We all stare at him blankly and I mumble something about it being shocking, and then we quickly move onto a more light-hearted topic of conversation.   To which he says that he is obviously much older than us (he’s 20) and proceeds to ask if we are all in high school ... because obviously only high school students wouldn’t want to have a political exchange with a complete stranger, right?

Trying not to be too miffed, we valiantly try to continue chatting about idyll nonsense and the topic turns to surfing.   So my friend Zach (who is coloured) says that when he goes in the sea his hair turns into a complete afro.   I, being the sometimes not-so-proud owner of masses of curly locks myself, know exactly how he feels and so I say that maybe I should have been born coloured because of my hair.   To which Theodore tells me that I am a racist.   Oh, and that he can’t believe that I am using the race card which is so passé’ in today’s day and age.   Before I can say a word, he begins another diatribe about how he was trying to put us into buckets (yes bucket, not boxes, buckets), but now that I said something racist he just doesn’t know where to place me.   Clearly it should be in that rusty old bucket that’s wedged right in between rapists and serial killers.    

I was not in the mood to get into an argument and I decide to ignore the *insert swear word of your own choice here* and try to enjoy the little bit of my break that is left.   But oh no, clearly us racists are not allowed any relaxation time, because Theodore then chooses to tell us all about how he has decided to become a vegan (because we are so interested).   Yes, he informs us that even his yoghurt is vegan yoghurt and that eating meat is lazy.   We then get told that elephants and buffaloes eat only grass and they are huge, so that means that humans will not be malnourished if they only eat vegetables.   For those of you who don’t know, I respect our right as individuals to freely make our own decisions, but do not start grandstanding about your own lifestyle choices and expect everybody else to convert just because you say so.   Theodore was lucky that I was in a pretty placid mood, so instead of starting a fight I remembered my manners and completely zoned out while he continued to educate us about the benefits of ?Veganism? and how we were terrible people for eating meat.   To which Zach turned to me and said that he felt like some ribs.

When it finally reached 11:30 (break has never before gone so slowly), we all walked away from Theodore in a total state of befuddlement.   Who was that guy?!   And where did he learn his social skills?!   I keep on playing the exchange over and over in my head and the only conclusion that I can come to is that his rudeness and pomposity must be because he is black.   And I can say that, because I am such a racist.

10km challenge - Day 3

12 week 10km challenge:
WEEK 1:
Day 3:           Walk 5 minutes to warm up. Jog for 3 minutes. Walk for 5 minutes. 
                     Repeat this 3 times. 5 minute walk to finish.
 
Happy Spring Day!   I woke up this morning to a sunny Cape Town – a welcome relief from the rain we’ve been having – and decided to start September off with a bang and complete day 3 of my 10km challenge.   Knowing that this morning’s exercise would involve a total of 30minutes walking and 12mins of jogging, I was a bit apprehensive, but decided that it was absolutely necessary if I want to burn off last night’s cocktails!

Since I am cardio-impaired, I really struggle with running in public and am super embarrassed to be seen huffing and puffing after only a few minutes of mild jogging.   In an attempt to avoid this humiliation, I am always on the lookout for the most secluded (and relatively flat) parts of Vredehoek where I can pant in peace.   Today I headed off in a new direction and was soon rewarded with a rare patch of nature that one would never expect to find in the middle of the city.   A beautiful natural stream gushing over smooth stones and surrounded by green foliage made me stop and soak up the wonder that is our world.   Yay for mother earth, and yay for being able to enjoy her gifts.

Naturally I, being the Eastern Cape girl that I am, decided to partake in a bit of bundu bashing – surely that counts as extreme walking, right?   And lo and behold, on the other side of the stream and up a steep slope, I discovered a relatively flat and perfectly secluded sports field just for me!   I know I won’t be able to use this oasis during the week because it will undoubtedly be swarming with pre-pubescent boys in rugby shorts, but I took full advantage today and ran in complete privacy.   It really helped that a lap and a half of the field amounted to my 3minutes jogging time, so I found it a lot easier to stay focused knowing that I had a set goal in sight.   I never thought that a school sports field would bring me such joy! 

All in all, I found today a pretty challenging but immensely rewarding workout.   I returned home hot and sweaty and red in the face (I call it my sexy just-been-exercising look), but really pleased with myself and my progress.   Big tick to day 3!
